Pit & Fissure Sealants

Protection against tooth decay: Pit and fissure sealants create a barrier on the chewing surfaces of a child’s teeth, protecting them from bacteria, food particles, and acid that can lead to decay and cavities.

Non-invasive: Unlike other dental procedures, sealants do not require any drilling or removal of tooth structure, making them a non-invasive way to protect a child’s teeth.

Cost-effective: Sealants are an affordable way to prevent tooth decay and cavities, which can be much more expensive to treat with fillings, root canals, and other procedures.

Suitable for children of all ages: Pit and fissure sealants can be applied to baby teeth as well as permanent teeth, making them an effective preventative measure for children of all ages.

Avoid hard or sticky foods: For the first few hours after the procedure, it’s best for your child to avoid hard or sticky foods that could dislodge the sealants. Encourage your child to stick to soft foods like yogurt, sauce, and pudding, and to avoid chewing on hard candies, ice, or other hard objects.

Continue to brush and floss: Even with sealants in place, it’s important for your child to continue brushing their teeth twice a day and flossing once a day. This helps remove any plaque or debris that could accumulate on the surface of the sealants and lead to decay.

Attend regular dental check-ups: It’s important for your child to continue attending regular dental check-ups and cleanings to ensure that the sealants are in good condition and providing adequate protection against decay. The dentist will monitor the condition of the sealants and let you know if any touch-up or replacement is needed.

Look for signs of wear or damage: While sealants are designed to last for several years, they can sometimes become worn or damaged over time. Encourage your child to let you know if they experience any sensitivity or discomfort, or if they notice any wear or damage to the sealants. If you notice any issues, contact your child’s dentist for an evaluation.

High risk of cavities: Children who have a history of cavities or who are at high risk of developing cavities may benefit from pit and fissure sealants.

Difficulty brushing: Children who have difficulty reaching their molars and premolars with a toothbrush, or who may not have developed good brushing habits, can benefit from sealants to protect these teeth.

Developmental or medical conditions: Children who have developmental or medical conditions that make it difficult for them to maintain good oral hygiene may benefit from sealants to help prevent cavities.

Poor diet: Children who consume a diet high in sugar or who frequently eat snacks or sugary drinks throughout the day may be more susceptible to cavities and may benefit from pit and fissure sealants.
